Ross Young today tweeted that his most recent supply chain analysis suggests that the 27-inch external display with miniLED has been delayed to late October. He had previously stated that that it would be available in June.

Young claims that the delay is caused by the recent COVID-related locking downs in the Quanta production facility. Production is said to be setting up in another plant.

There are conflicting reports about the future of Apple’s display line since the release of the Apple Studio Display. The Studio Display is said to have filled a major gap in Apple’s product line, but it leaves many customers looking for more.

The Studio Display does not have a modern LED backlight like the miniLEDs. A middle ground between Studio Display as well as Pro Display XDR could satisfy the requirements. But it’s not certain what Apple is looking to fill in that gap.

Apple could, instead, decide to upgrade the aging Pro Display XDR, for example. Apple does have a first-party 27-inch display however, the new display is expected to be upgraded of that Studio Display.

Alongside the mini LED backlighting feature, Young believes that the monitor will also include the Apple ProMotion Variable Refresh Rate. Its Apple Studio Display in its present form is priced at $1,599 and comes that comes with its own processor A13 with the ability to support Center Stage and Spatial Audio as well as a 12MP Ultra Wide camera and 3-mic array.

Mini-LED backlighting will make it possible for the display to come with ProMotion with an adjustable refresh rate of up to 120Hz. This could lead to the display being basically an “Studio Display Pro” but it’s not known what Apple will use the same branding. Further details aren’t yet available as well as pricing.

The current Studio Display starts at $1,599. Young President of Display Supply Chain Consultants, has previously stated that the sixth-generation iPad mini will have the 8.3-inch screen in addition to the 16-inch and 14-inch MacBook Pro models would include ProMotion.
