IBM Partners with The Nature Conservancy India

IBM is partnering with The Nature Conservancy India to monitor the water quality and level in real-time with IoT technology.
The lake has long been a victim of improperly managed waste disposal. This is partly attributable to climate change and is clear from recent studies that have been conducted in the region.

In recent years, there has been a significant decline in clean water quality flowing through the restrooms and contributing to our natural resources like wildlife. Furthermore, sustainable development is also threatened by unchecked pollution.

The Nature Conservancy India uses a metric — dissolved organic carbon (DOC) — to measure the organic harm in water and wastewater. The levels are usually between 0-10 milligrams per liter, and we can safely say that Lake Sembakkam has a group of 3-70 milligrams per liter, which is not near safe or healthy levels.

IBM is partnering with The Nature Conservancy India to deploy a network of IoT monitors that check the health of their lake and offer real-time data on its status in helping them conserve.
Manoj Balachandran, head of CSR and volunteer engagement at IBM India & South Asia, told ZDNet that the IBM team was mobilized for three months of direct work with The Nature Conservancy.

IoT project on Lake Sembakkam

A planning process of eight months followed the development period of a year, which helped The Nature Conservancy and IBM form a project plan based on needs specific to Lake Sembakkam and prior IBM IoT deployments for water conservation. That includes The Jeffer.

Globally, Balachandran said that IBM has done five other IBM Service Corps deployments in support of water-related work with TNC since 2016 (including projects focused on Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Kenya, and global uses).

When there were no reminders, the lake environmental experts would have to check in regularly to see how the lake was responding. They wanted a solution that could help monitor it over a more extended period so they did not have to do this themselves.”

IBM employees are backing a project to develop a smartphone app that will use AI to write high-quality reviews of various products. The platform they’re designing will enable real-time monitoring and viewing models of predicted sales patterns.
Their design for IoT will allow you to pull data about different water bodies, not just ones you have access to! They use earth-observation satellite images and can analyze conditions worldwide.

With a few days to go before the Golden Lake project, the utility company is pleased with how satellites or airplanes using AI software have collected data on water flow, water levels, and ice thicknesses. These AI models are now finding new customers across North America who could experience year-round access to renewable energy and internet services using similar systems in tandem. Balachandran said.
Balachandran refers to an article that explains how IBM’s venture Saaf Water has created acclaimed groundwater quality monitoring technology.

“We are expecting this open-source technology could help avoid water-related health risks and while it’s not off the ground yet, we certainly look forward to the people behind it working hard to get ready for communities in need,” Vancheswaran said.

Balachandran told ZDNet India’s The Nature Conservancy and its partners also organize community drives to remove solid waste and invasive species. While there are also some adverse effects of dredging, these have been mitigated by the increased water storage capacity of the lake on the whole. The benefits of flood mitigation are direct and significant.

By deploying sensors to sample the water and using AI, the lakes management company will be able to prioritize when it comes to mitigation efforts. Additionally, they’ll be able to see particular conditions in real-time and make adjustments accordingly. Balachandran said.

The Nature Conservancy India has recently started a 3-year scientific study of the catchment area around Lake Sembakkam. The watershed also includes the neighborhoods and canals that feed into the lake. The IoT system designed by IBM will help identify interventions that can improve the hydrology and natural habitats of a watershed. It also has the potential to address environmental challenges like water quality for a lake.”
