Joel Campbell Samuels, a professional soccer player from Costa Rica, is a forward and winger for Liga MX club Leon as well as the Costa Rican national football team. He was born on 26 June 1992.

He joined Arsenal in 2011. He then went on loan to the Spanish club Real Betis and the Greek team Olympiacos. Campbell made his debut for Arsenal in the match that saw the team win the 2014 FA Community Shield. He was again loaned to Villarreal in La Liga before scoring his first goal for Arsenal in 2015.

Saprissa

Joel Campbell began his career with Saprissa in 2009. In January 2011, he was loaned out to Puntarenas. According to a Costa Rican television report, Campbell signed a contract at Arsenal on July 28th, 2011, after being spotted and contacted by Danny Karbassiyoon, a club scout.

Campbell later admitted that he was still in discussions with Arsenal, even though he hadn’t signed yet. Campbell was close to signing a five-year contract with Arsenal, despite turning down offers from Sevilla (Fiorentina) and Fiorentina (Fiorentina), according to reports. Campbell claims that Alex Ferguson from Manchester United also approached him to offer him a place under Ryan Giggs’ supervision.

Arsenal

Arsenal signed Campbell on August 19, 2011. However, eight days later it was revealed that Campbell had not been able to obtain a work visa that would have allowed him to compete in England. Campbell was granted the license in July 2013.

Loan to Lorient

After being denied work permits in England, Campbell and Sunu joined Lorient on loan. Sunu was granted permanent status. He made his Lorient debut as a replacement for Gregory Bouillon in the 79th minute at Sochaux. This set up Innocent Emeghara’s goal and earned Lorient a point.

Campbell scored his first goal in Lorient’s 2-0 win over Valenciennes, on October 1. His right-footed shot reached the bottom left corner. Campbell scored his second goal in Lorient’s Coupe de la Ligue match against Montpellier on October 26th.

Loan to Real Betis

Campbell signed a season-long loan agreement with La Liga team Real Betis, on July 6, 2012. He made his debut on August 25 when he took over for Salvador Agra in the final 20 minutes of their Rayo Vallecano 2-1 defeat.

Campbell was a part of 28 league games. He scored twice. The first was on December 2, to help Betis beat Deportivo de La Corua by 3-2. The second was on January 13, to help Betis beat Levante by 2-0 at home.

Lending to Olympiacos

Campbell was granted permission to work in England in the summer of 2013. However, he returned to Olympiacos in Greece to take out a one-year loan.

Joel Campbell was outstanding in Olympiacos’ 5-1 win over OFI Crete, on October 27, 2013. He also had four assists. Campbell was again on point when Olympiacos beat PAOK 4-0 on November 10. Campbell scored a goal and assisted two more.

Return to Arsenal

Campbell was Arsenal’s first appearance in the League Cup third round on September 23. He lined up with Alexis Sanchez, and Lukas Pozolski and defended against Southampton in a 1-2 defeat. BBC Sport reports that Campbell and Podolski were “essentially unidentified” during the match.

Campbell was selected for the Costa Rican team in the CONCACAF U-17 Championship 2009. He was the team’s top scorer, even though he only scored two goals. He participated in the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2009, which took place in Nigeria. He was then selected for the CONCACAF U-20 Championship in 2011 and tied for the tournament’s top scorer with six goals.
