Kentucky Fried Chicken is incredibly delicious, but it is also extremely unhealthy for your health. It’s an enormous disappointment that we’re not able to eat it! It’s that moment when you bite into a massive, chewy chicken wang, perfectly spiced and stuffed with soft, juicy, and perfectly cooked chicken. It’s simply the best. You could even serve it with some macaroni and cheese and coleslaw.

The good news is that you can now enjoy crispy KFC-style fried chicken that does not contain grains, flour, vegetable oils, or MSG, which KFC employs, and is keto-friendly. Hallejulah, praise the lard! If you’re in the mood for some Mac & Cheese, I’ve got you covered!

Let’s discuss this recipe. There are some rules as well as tips I’ve picked up along the way in my experiments.

TIPS TO MAKE THE PERFECT KFC KETO FRIED CHICKEN

1.) Substitutes for this recipe are NOT PERFECTLY RECOMMENDED.

Do you have the option of substituting coconut flour or almond flour to make your protein powder? Yes, you can, however, I’m here to declare that you shouldn’t. If you make it, it won’t look exactly like the photos here, and it will be coarse, smoky tasting, and will have significantly higher levels of carbs.

What can you substitute in place of Dairy for this dish? Technically, yes. I’ve seen other people succeed in making keto chicken that is fried and coated using a non-dairy coating made that is made of almond milk and you could even make buttermilk using coconut milk or almond milk (same proportions as in the recipe ); however, it won’t necessarily taste exactly like the original.

This is how it should appear when the bird is when submerged with marinating buttermilk mix and seasoning mix (covered and kept in the refrigerator) for up to 4 hours.

If you’re lactose intolerant or allergic to dairy products, you will be unable to use the protein powder whey, however, which this recipe requires. Do you have the option of substituting both the protein powder whey and the low-carb dairy milk to make a dairy free alternative?

Yes, you are able to because you are free to do what you’d like! But I am not able to guarantee that you will be awed by the texture and taste exactly the way you would have if you follow the recipe.

2.) Avoid Omitting any of the Ingredients in the Recipe.

This recipe makes use of a similar version of the “Secret KFC seasoning’, which was previously released to the general public. The flavors of this mix are crucial to ensure the most flavorful keto Fried Chicken recipe.

Since we don’t use regular flour and instead we use unflavored whey protein powder for our coating, we require the additional flavors we can extract out of this mixture. If you’re lacking one or two ingredients this won’t be anything to worry about but I would suggest that you make it with all items that are listed in the recipe, in order to get the most flavorful experience! You can find these items at almost every store.

Celery salt is sometimes sold as celery seeds. That’s the one I used, simply grinding it with my pestle and mortar, and adding a tiny bit and salt. Both are suitable for this recipe!

3.) Be sure to use the correct Temperature for your FRYING OIL!

Frying with oil is quite a challenge even if you don’t own a deep-fryer in your home. It’s not necessary to have a deep fryer however you can make use of the large pot or dutch oven (I utilize my dutch-oven!).

The problem, if you don’t have a fryer, is being aware of the temperature of the oil. If the oil is too hot, the chicken will be burned on the outside, before it is cooked to perfection :(. In addition to my findings, protein powder burns up much more quickly and at a lower temperature than regular flour when cooking!

When I tried this recipe, whenever the oil temperature was above 325 degrees F, the coating on the chicken exploded and became very brown before the chicken was cooked, which significantly affected the texture as well as the flavor of this dish.

4.) Verify the internal Temperature of your Chicken to Ensure It’s Cooked!

Another issue with cooking foods that are battered, or coated is that you don’t get to observe your chicken! The exterior will usually look like the chicken has been cooked on the outside within the first few minutes, but it’s difficult to know if the inside of your wings is cooked to perfection without a thermometer for quick reading.

It is possible to use the frying timer; however, while examining the temperatures of my chicken’s wings and breasts, that each was of a different thickness, and it was possible to cook one piece too long in a haphazard manner without knowing whether it was cooked to the middle. The middle of all your chicken pieces should be the temperature of 165 degrees F to ensure that it is an acceptable temperature for consumption.
