In 2007, the 13-year-old Kovacic was the target of scouts from various elite European clubs. However, following the advice from his family, Kovacic chose to join the serial Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb.

In Zagreb, Mateo Kovacic spent three seasons (an accident-plagued time) playing for the youth squads of the club prior to getting a call-up to the senior squad in the month of October. On the 20th of November, 2010, his first game in the league at the age of 16 and 198 days, the Croatian was the youngest player in the historical history of Croatia’s league when he scored the team’s 4th score in the 6-0 victory against Hrvatski Dragovoljac.

In August of 2015, as a result of respect of the UEFA Financial Fair Play Regulations (FFP), Inter Milan was forced to sell Mateo Kovacic to Spanish La Liga giants, Real Madrid. In his first (2015-16) season Kovacic was given regular participation under the former Real Coach Rafael Benitez making a total of 34 appearances.

However, his appearances decreased after the appointment of a coach, who was appointed in the first half of 2016. Kovacic only played 8 times during the team’s triumphant 15-16 Champions League campaign and was only a part-time player during their La Liga/UEFA Champions League double. Kovacic was even given a restricted playing time, as Kovacic played just 6 times in the 2017-18 Champions League campaign which saw the club win its thirteenth Champions League title.

On the international scene, Mateo Kovacic made his debut for the Croatian national team in a friendly match for the under-14 age group against Slovakia. The youngster’s talent was also showcased by Croatia at U-15, U-17, U-19, and U-21 levels. Kovacic was eventually given his first invitation to join the senior squad in August of 2012.

The player of great talent was part of the Croatian team’s 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification games and was part of Croatia’s team for finals in the 2014 World Cup Finals. After a less than impressive performance during the Euro 2016 tournament, Kovacic’s Croatia qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup where they made it to the first FIFA World Cup final in Moscow but ultimately fell 4-2 to eventual winners France.
