Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 GPU Review

Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 gpu

It was impossible for me to believe my eyes when I triple-checked my benchmarks. The GeForce RTX 4090 GPU is a powerful graphics card. This card marks a new era of PC gaming. I can now enjoy the high frame rates at 1440p in 4K.

The GeForce RTX 4090 Gpu is capable of delivering smooth 4K performance in Cyberpunk2077 when paired with Nvidia’s latest update to its Deep Learning Super Sampling(DLSS) program. This is something that has never been possible before. This is almost 140fps in 4K, with all settings at their maximum and psycho ray trace enabled. At 1440p, it’s close to the limit of my monitor at 240Hz.

DLSS 3 delivers an incredible performance boost. In games that don’t yet support it, you still get about 70% faster frame rates.

This comes at a high price. The RTX 4090 GPU, which costs $1,599 is at the top of the GPU market. However, its large footprint might make it difficult to fit in some PC cases. The Graphic card consumes 450 watts of electricity and will need plenty spare PCIe power connectors in order to power it up. If you are willing to accept the card’s size, price, and power requirements, it is capable of providing an unparalleled 4K experience.

The GeForce RTX 4090 GPU Founders Edition arrives in a huge box. It is exactly how I imagine that you’d receive a winning check if you win the lottery.

It is almost 10mm shorter that the RTX 3090. However, it looks much larger. Although it was easy to fit into my bag.

Although the overall design of a GeForce RTX 4090 GPU looks very similar to one made by RTX 3090, it has seven blades in place of nine. The fan occupies more space on the back of the card.

Nvidia has also updated its power connector with the GeForce RTX 4090 GPU. The single 12-pin standard PCIe 5 standard can provide up to 600 watts. This connector can also be found on the RTX3090Ti, and Nvidia includes a 12VHPWR adapter to allow you to connect four 8-pin PCIe power cable. It’s twice as many eight-pin cables required over the RTX3090, but technically, you only need three eight pin cables that can deliver 150 watts per. If you want to increase the card’s speed, Nvidia recommends that you connect the fourth eight-pin.

For the RTX4090, you will likely need a 1,000-watt power source. This is because you will need to pair it with the latest generation CPUs to get the best out of the power. Nvidia recommends 850 Watts, but it is possible to have more power for overclocking.

I still love the Founders Edition design Nvidia’s RTX card cards. Even though it has seen very little change, it is still a great choice.

  • I have been using the Core i9-12900K Intel processor to test the GeForce RTX 4090 GPU. This GPU was paired with a 32-inch Samsung Odyssey G7 Monitor for 1440p testing. This monitor supports refresh rates of up to 240Hz and Nvidia’s GSync technology.
  • To see what the new Ada Lovelace generation GPUs have to offer over Ampere, I’ve compared the RTX4090 and the RTX3090. I have been testing various AAA games including Forza HorizonAssassin’s Creed Vahalla and Cyberpunk2077. I have also been testing DLSS 3 Cyberpunk2077 and Microsoft Flight Simulator. Both are notoriously difficult games.
  • All games were tested on the RTX4090 at maximum or ultra settings. Most games deliver frames rates exceeding 100fps even with ray-tracing enabled. The GeForce RTX 4090 GPU delivers an impressive 167fps framerate even with ray tracing disabled. Control hits a staggering 223fps at 1440p.

Watch dogs: Legion has been a demanding game even on the RTX 3090. The RTX 4090 GPU delivers 132fps with ray tracing disabled, a 36% increase in performance. From the RTX 3090 to RTX4090 at 1440p, I experienced an average performance jump of nearly 50% in all games that I tested. This is a remarkable leap by itself, but DLSS 3 makes it even more exciting.

I have been testing new Cyberpunk2077 and Microsoft Flight Simulator versions, both of which include DLSS3. The latest version includes the AI upscaling techniques of DLSS 2 and a new AI frame generation tech using the Ada Lovelace architecture. Frame generation basically generates two frames by using existing rendering techniques. Then, a third frame is added using the new frame generation technology. This result is a huge leap in performance, and it’s only available to DLSS 3 for the RTX 40 series.

Microsoft Flight Simulator (DLSS 2 Microsoft Flight Simulator)64fps

Cyberpunk2077 is played at around 114fps with maxed settings, psycho ray tracing, DLSS 2 quality and maxed settings on the RTX4090. This jumps to nearly 60 percent if you enable frame generation. If you’re willing and able to sacrifice some image quality, the performance DLSS 3 Mode will boost this to 217fps. This is a significant jump at only 1440p for a game which runs at 70fps on an RTX3090.

The same thing can be found on Microsoft Flight Simulator. I tested the Flight Simulator on a special build and it was able to manage 64 fps at settings of ultra, DLSS2 quality, and online mode disabled. Simply switching to DLSS3 frame generator increased this speed by more that 100 percent to 133fps. I was amazed at the performance I saw in Microsoft Flight Simulator. This game is extremely challenging.

4K benchmarks

You’ll be impressed by the 1440p benchmarks. Now, let’s see what the GeForce RTX 4090 GPU is capable of at 4K. I paired this GPU and a 31.5-inch Acer Nitro XV2 display to test 4K. This monitor supports refresh rates as high as 144Hz. The benchmarks will show you that the GeForce RTX 4090 GPU can deliver the type of frame rates required to take full advantage of this 4K monitor.

While performance gains at 1440P have been close to 50%, the gains are even more dramatic at 4K. I have found that the GeForce RTX 4090 GPU offers a roughly 70% improvement in performance at four-kilograms over the RTX 3090. This card is amazing for 4K gaming.

I haven’t really been interested 4K gaming due to the fact that GPUs can’t deliver the high frame rate I’m used to at 1440P. I can easily tell when my game is running at 120 fps. However, the GeForce RTX 4090 GPU with DLSS 3 is tempting me to switch to 4K.

The GeForce RTX 4090 GPU was my main device. I played Cyberpunk2077 at 4K because it had all the settings and ray tracing at 4K. The RTX 3090 was unable to handle everything at max at 4K. I experienced a sludge-like experience, with 30fps dropping frequently.

I achieved nearly 140fps with DLSS 3 at 4K, on average, with everything turned up, psycho ray tracing enabled, and DLSS 3 Performance Mode enabled. Night City was smoother even without DLSS 3; regular DLSS 2 quality delivers 66fps. However, playing Cyberpunk 2077 at well over 100fps is a joy.

Cyberpunk2077 is not the only game that runs well at 4K on GeForce RTX 4090 GPU. Most games delivered more than 100 frames per second at 4K across the board. Control felt super smooth when I enabled ray tracing and DLSS. It also had a 158fps framerate, which is a lot higher than what I was used to seeing at 1440p. I hope DLSS3 comes to Control, because of the amazing improvements made in Cyberpunk2077. It would be wonderful to see more games with DLSS support.

Microsoft Flight Simulator runs great on the GeForce RTX 4090 GPU, with DLSS 3 disabled. The Flight Simulator special test build manages to achieve 61fps when set at ultra, DLSS2 quality, and with online mode disabled. DLSS3 frame generation increases this speed by more than 100 per cent to 125fps. This makes it much more accessible for ultra settings in more difficult sections.

geforce 4090

Nvidia’s Ada Lovelace card is the first to show that there have been significant performance improvements over the Ampere 30 series generation. Although the RTX4090’s $1,599 price tag is a bit high for PC gamers, it opens the door to what could be an exciting new generation of cards.

DLSS 3 transforms frame rates in this area while maintaining options for quality, balance or performance for imagery. DLSS 3 has only been confirmed by 35 apps and games, so we will not see its full impact until then.

The GeForce RTX 4090 GPU, even without Nvidia’s DLSS 3 Support, is a top-of-the-line performer. The GeForce RTX 4090 GPU is the card to choose if you want the best 4K gaming cards. The RTX 4080 cards will be available in November. They offer a lower entry price to this generation of cards. Will the performance of the $899 12GB RTX4080 be as good?

AMD could make a comeback in November to upset the Nvidia RTX40-series with RDNA 3. But it’s difficult to believe it will have anything like DLSS 3. This is the real star of the GeForce RTX 4090’s show — and reason to upgrade if Nvidia can pull off the same support as we have seen with DLSS 2 thus far.

The GeForce RTX 4090 GPU is a beast for 4K gaming and I’m seriously tempted to upgrade. The $1,599 price tag is what’s keeping me from upgrading.
