The RTX 4080 boasts a significant boost in performance for gaming, with an estimated 30% increase compared to the RTX 3080. However, it also comes with a new 12-pin power connector, which may require additional care when overclocking or using for mining purposes. Despite this, the RTX 4080 has a lower TDP of 130 watts compared to the RTX 4090, which may mitigate concerns about overheating and potential damage to the 12-pin connectors.

How Powerful Will The NVIDIA RTX 40 Series GPUs Be For Crypto Mining?

While the NVIDIA RTX 30 series is still relatively scarce, the focus has already shifted to the next generation of GPUs, including the NVIDIA RTX 40 series and the Intel Bitcoin Mining ASIC. It is unclear at this time how these new technologies will impact the mining of cryptocurrencies such as Ethereum. However, it is worth noting that as more information about the NVIDIA RTX 40 series becomes available, it will become clearer how it may be used for mining.

Given the wide range of products within a single RTX series, it is likely that some cards from the RTX 30 series, such as the RTX 3090 with its 114 MH/s hashrate, may still outperform several cards from the next generation.

Twitter leaker @TtLexington suggests that the RTX 40 series will receive a similar performance increase over its predecessor as the RTX 30 series did over the 20 series. While this does not directly translate to crypto mining performance, it does allow for an estimate of potential hash rate.

If we compare the hash rate of RTX 2080 with 40 MH/s and the RTX 3080 with 100 MH/s, it marks an increase of 60 MH/s or 150% increase. Similarly, the RTX 2070 has a hash rate of 40 MH/s whereas the RTX 3070 has 62 MH/s, this is an increase of 22 MH/s or just over 50%.

Given the variations in performance among different cards within the RTX series, it is likely that the RTX 40 series will not have a uniform trend in hash rate changes. Based on past performance, it could be estimated that an RTX 4080 would have a hash rate of around 150 MH/s, and an RTX 4070 around 80 MH/s. However, these estimates may be affected by other factors.

Rumors from YouTuber Moore is Dead suggest that the 40 series could have a power consumption of up to 600W, significantly higher than the 350W required by the RTX 3080. This could potentially decrease the mining profitability. Additionally, with the Ethereum merge approaching, the demand for Nvidia GPUs may slow down as the blockchain will be transitioning to the Proof of Stake consensus. Furthermore, the Nvidia sales have slumped, possibly due to the ongoing bear market in crypto. Will the RTX 40 Series Have Crypto Mining LHR Limits?

NVIDIA’s preference is for its GPUs to be used primarily for gaming, which is why the company has implemented hash rate restrictions on all new RTX 3070, 3080, and 3060 Ti GPUs. These GPUs now come with the Lite Hash Rate (LHR) identifier. According to Hashrate.no, the RTX 3080 LHR and RTX 3070 LHR have hash rates of 70 MH/s and 46 MH/s respectively, which represents a reduction of 26-30% for the LHR models.

It is not yet known if NVIDIA will implement the LHR restrictions on the RTX 40 series. However, with ongoing component shortages affecting the GPU supply, NVIDIA may choose to deter miners from purchasing these cards with LHR.

Speculations suggest that the RTX 40 series could launch in late 2022, but by then Ethereum mining may have already become obsolete.

The Ethereum 2.0 release, which has been delayed multiple times, is set to replace the current proof-of-work consensus mechanism with proof-of-stake. This transition will eliminate the need for miners in the Ethereum network and will instead rely on Ethereum staking for validation. This change was initially expected to happen in mid-2022, but due to the continuous delays in the release, it is now likely that the launch will be pushed to a later date, possibly even after the launch of the RTX 40 Series.
