Pakistan's Mango Production to Suffer 50% Decline Due to Heatwave

According to the president of an exporters’ and growers’ organization, mango production in Pakistan is expected to drop by 50 percent or more this year due to a lack of water and unusually high temperatures.

In May 2022, the country was hit by extreme heatwaves, with temperatures reaching up to 50 degrees Celsius in some areas.

Heatwave Effect on Mango Production

This heatwave is having a significant impact on the South Asian region, and scientists have warned that over 1 billion people may be at risk as a result of its effects.

The Head of the Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters, Importers, and Merchants Association, Waheed Ahmed, has said that the crops were severely affected by the heatwave that quickly changed from 28 degrees in March to around 42 degrees. He said that the association has reduced its export targets by 25,000 tonnes in comparison to the previous year.

The official added that the mango harvest is expected to decrease by 50% this year, as the scorching hot weather during the flowering in the fruit trees caused the crop to suffer. While the heat can ripen the sweet yellow fruit, the unintentionally early increase in temperatures, along with the shortage of water, has severely affected the crop.

It is crucial to point out the fact that Pakistan is the fifth-largest mango producer, following India, China, Thailand, and Indonesia. Pakistan has an average annual mango production of around 1.8 million tonnes.
