Review: Are Taco Bell Nacho Fries Worth It?

Taco Bell Nacho

Taco Bell Nacho Fries reviews: Although I don’t brag, I am a certified fry and nacho snob. So, naturally, everything about nacho fries attracted me to try them. Even the grandiose claims made by fans and Taco Bell.

Taco Bell Nacho Fries

These Taco Bell Nacho Fries come with nacho cheese and are seasoned with Mexican seasoning. You can’t upgrade them to Nacho Fries Supreme unless you add melted cheese, seasoned beef, tomatoes, and sour cream. The Bell Grande doubles the portion size at $5. You can also opt for guac at an extra cost if you’re feeling fancy.

However, it is more important to consider why you should care about what they are.

Reason 1: Taco Bell Nacho Fries fries are one of the most successful products launched by Taco Bell – meaning that they did better than their tacos.

Reason number two: Taco Bell is a well-known brand for tacos.

Three reasons: The internet was so close to rioting when they were taken away.

Fourth reason: The buzz around these French Fries from Taco Bell is explosive.

Histories

Taco Bell introduced its nacho fries in 2018 with a lot of self-promotion. Their press release was, even though I hate to admit it:

Taco Bell Nacho Fries will be available in all major restaurants across the country starting at $1 from the same menu brand that brought you Crunchwrap Supreme and Naked Chicken Chalupa.

This year’s most anticipated menu item will be made crispy with bold Mexican seasoning. It will be served with a side of warm Nacho Cheese, starting January 25.

A bit overdone? It might be, but you can hear the bass beat of Taco Bell as you read the text. It wasn’t Taco Bell alone that blew its horn or rang its bell. ):

After pulling these fries, launching them as an LTO, and then relaunching them, repelling them, and relaunching them again in typical fast-food fashion, Taco Bell announced plans for an “all-new flavor innovation” that will be launched in January 2020. This is sure to attract critically and fan acclaim. We don’t know what the flavor innovation is or if it will be accepted by critics of Taco Bell, myself included.

Inspiration

Taco Bell’s inspiration for the nacho fries seems to have come from McDonald’s. The cheese, beef, and guac toppings, as well as any other condiments, are not leaving Taco Bell. It seems smart to take on the giants of burger mavens such as McDonald’s, BK, and Wendy’s without taking too much financial risk.

Would I still call these fries… “-inspired”? Eh, hardly. Taco Bell combines spicy and loaded fries for years. It’s not as innovative as the Doritos locos tacos or their naked chalupa. This is the most unique thing about these fries. I’ll explain why I added quotations.

Different types of Nacho Fries

Two types are available or two types will become readily available. The Mexican seasoned fries are the first. We’ll have to wait until January 2020 to see the other. We know that Taco Bell has referred to any spin-off as a “flavor invention.”

The most exciting thing about these fries to me isn’t what Taco Bell wants you to do with them; it’s what you can do. I am eagerly waiting for a maverick recipe creator to make these fries great again.

We’ll have to eat the fries as they were intended.

Taco Bell Nacho Fries Review

TASTE AND TEXTURE 3/5

Taco Bell claims that their fries are crisp to perfection, but I was left wondering what kind of perfection they were actually crispy too. These will probably be more popular with you if you like the slightly crispy outside and smooshed ‘tato inside. They didn’t become mushy under the toppings.

The texture of the cheese was exactly what you would expect from Taco Bell. After cooling, the cheese left a thick layer that was impossible to penetrate. Worse, the cheese would slide right off the fries when it was warm.

These are Mexican misses in terms of taste. They didn’t have any cumin, which surprised me. The flavoring was average at best. It was not Mexican and it might have been considered Mexican-inspired. They were not bad tasting, but there wasn’t much flavor beyond a vague mix of flavors and ‘tato.

Are THEY HEALTHY 2/5

It’s not possible, but it would be surprising to find a healthy fry in a drive-thru window. Standard fries have 18g of fat (28%DV.). The superior version adds 24g of fat (a staggering 37% DV.). The Bell grande, double the fat to 48g (a substantial 74% DV.

Even though the Taco Bell Nacho Fries are small, they’re not that big. It is difficult to believe that the fries are so small when you consider their portion sizes. Consider their history. They are not the most healthy thing you could order.

Are THEY VALUED? 5/5

They are only $1 so you can’t really see why they shouldn’t be worth trying. They were disappointing for me, but I am a nacho and fry snob. But they caused panic when they returned in 2019.

Taco Bell tweeted that there was so much fuss over these fries, that they announced, “We’ve listened to our fans loudly – they’ve made ripples across social media, demanding we bring back our legendary fries.”

My one opinion is “eh” on these seems lost in the noise of raving fans.

FINAL VERDICT

These are delicious and something I will never regret. This is especially important if you like steak fries and cheese whiz, which is basically what it is.
