2021 – Sean Johnson was appointed Club Captain at start of year.  and he has continued his stellar reputation in the sticks for 2021. Johnson was once again a Club Captain, helping the Club reach the playoffs. In that time, he scored two big penalty saves in playoff games. The two incredible stops against Portland Timbers in MLS Cup helped the team become 4-2 winners on penalty kicks.

2020: In 2020, the U.S. international played 23 matches in MLS and kept seven clean sheets. This reaffirmed American’s reputation as a critical part of the team.

2019: He was a goalkeeper and played in 29 matches. NYCFC games were only missed when he was on international duty. Johnson was a top-notch goalkeeper in Major League Soccer, recording seven shutouts and making 78 saves.

2018: He scored 10 shutouts while tipped the 100 mark as he led NYCFC back to MLS Cup Playoffs. It was his second season as the starting goalkeeper. He made 32 appearances and was called up to Gregg Berhalter’s inaugural January Camp as USMNT manger

2017: Sean Johnson joined NYCFC in the offseason. He was offered the starting job as soon as the season opened. Johnson had 32 starts with City, scoring 7 goals and 96 saves to help the Club achieve its best ever finish. Johnson also received a call-up for the United States Men’s National Team’s 2017 Gold Cup. This was his first involvement with this team since 2013

2016: Had five shutouts (and 68 saves) in 22 games played for Chicago Fire. NYCFC bought him from Atlanta United on December 11 in a halfday trade window, in exchange for GAM/TAM.

2015: He saved 59 games in a season marred at Chicago by injuries. Despite the low number of games Johnson was able to score shutouts in March 29 vs. PHI and April 24 vs. NYC as well as July 11 vs. SEA (August 2 vs. DAL). Johnson also participated in three U.S. Open Cup matches.

2014: One of three players who appeared in 33 matches, a record for the team. Named Chicago Fire MVP, Defensive Player and of the Year

2013: Jurgen Klinsmann, head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team, selected him to take part in the annual January training camp. A member of the U.S. team that won the CONCACAF Gold Cup crown in 2013.

2012: In 31 matches, earned five shutouts. Also, scored 1.24 goals per match in 2,766 minutes. As part of the U.S. U 23 Men’s National Team for Olympic Qualifying, missed three matches in the season. MLS Cup Playoffs : Started and played all 90 minutes of a 2-1 loss against HOU in Eastern Conference Knockout match 10/31.

2011: He played 28 matches for The Fire. He earned seven shutouts, and an average of 1.32 goals per match over 2,520 minutes. This was his second season in Chicago.

2010: Sean Johnson selected in the fourth round, (No. 51 overall) of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft, as a Generation adidas Player. In his rookie season, he played 13 matches, and earned three shutouts. Five NAPA Save of the Week nominations were received and three of the weekly awards were won.

A member of the U.S. U23 Olympic Qualifying list…Participated in the match in the 39th minutes of CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying, which ended in a draw with El Salvador on 3/26. Klinsmann’s January camp was also a run in 2015. He earned a cap with a second half appearance against Panama in February 8. Johnson was also called up ahead of the Sept. 8 match between Brazil and America at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough (Mass.). Johnson was not present at the match, but was on the bench.


He played in both the years he attended Central Florida. In 37 career games, Johnson racked up seven shutouts as well as 191 saves. Johnson was also a U-20 player for the United States during his time in Central Florida.
