Securing the future of water is an investment in our planet

Water is frequently referred to as the “mother” of all development challenges in Pakistan. The future of water underpins critical aspects of each of these grand challenges, from food security and energy security to climate change adaptation and sustainable development, necessitating a multidisciplinary approach to solving the Water-Energy-Food-Climate nexus.

The agricultural sector alone consumes more than 90% of Pakistan’s freshwater resources. World Environment Day allows us to reassess and appreciate the significance of key elements directly affecting our natural resources, as well as long-term changes that will aid in the preservation of our planet’s health. The Water Information Center and LUMS Technology (WIT) conducts research and development to improve water resource efficiency and equity management in Pakistan’s Indus Basin by studying human-water interactions with computer science, hydraulic information technology, economics, systems analysis, and many other disciplines.

Digital water accounting is the future of water

 We are currently looking into the possibilities of using digital water accounting in irrigation and data-driven technology to protect against hydro-disasters and climate shocks, as well as promoting sustainable farming practices and nature conservation methods. Many promising technologies, options, reforms, and practices are in place to effectively control the demand for our precious water resources.

WIT Center addresses several critical policy questions: Would any of the proposed interventions be effective? In a new study, WIT researchers emphasized the future of water is the importance of being cautious when investing in irrigation systems to avoid the infamous irrigation efficiency paradox, which is faced by several countries around the world.

WIT researchers developed IAMs in another collaboration, which is integrated assessments (IAMs) to determine the future of water and right balance of investments in demand-based solutions (e.g., smart irrigation) as well as supply-based options (e.g., the construction of new reservoirs) or to evaluate the benefits of transboundary cooperation against regional rivalries in this region’s Indus basin.

Agriculture practices necessitate care and investment to create sustainable practices for people and the environment. The majority of farmers in Pakistan are classified as smallholders.

There is some debate about whether these small-scale farms can survive in the face of industrial agriculture technology (mechanization or chemicalization).
