Sheikh Muhammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan becomes new president of UAE after the demise of Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE’s long-serving de facto ruler, was elected the new president of UAE on Saturday, according to official media. This occurred just one day after the death of Sheikh Khalifa.
According to the WAM news agency, Sheikh Mohamed was elected the new president of UAE by the Federal Supreme Council. He ascended to the throne of the oil-rich country founded by his father in 1971.
Sheikh Mohamed, also known as ‘MBZ,’ met members of The Federal Supreme Council, which is made up of the new president of uae seven emirates. This was as the oil-rich country enters a time of mourning for Sheikh Khalifa.
His ascension was widely anticipated after years of leading the charge in the desert state of 10,000,000 people. He had been unable to do so due to ill health.
His low-key leadership has allowed the United Arab Emirates to send a probe to Mars and put a man into space. It also opened its first nuclear reactor.
It is closely allied with Saudi Arabia and has emerged as the leader of a reshaped Middle East following the retreat of traditional power and reduced involvement by the US. The US has joined the fight against Iran-backed militants in Yemen, forging ties with Israel.
Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed’s demise:
Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Sheikh Mohamed’s predecessor, died on Friday.
The Ministry of Presidential Affairs reported Khalifa’s death, which was also the ruler of Abu Dhabi, the UAE’s richest emirate, but did not provide any details.
“The Ministry of Presidential Affairs grieves to the UAE people and Islamic nations the passing of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan,” the ministry stated in a statement via state media.
The ministry stated that the UAE would observe a 40-day mourning period, with flags flying at half-mast starting Friday. It also suspended work for all public and private sector employees for three days.
Soon after Khalifa’s passing, condolences began to pour in from Arab leaders, including the king of Bahrain, Egypt’s president, and the prime minister of Iraq.
In a condolence message, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his sadness at the death of Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed.
Analysts believe that the new president will face more competition for UAE’s position as a regional financial hub, especially from Saudi Arabia. He may also be expected to take a tougher stance against Iran. Ryan Bohl, a Stratfor Worldview Middle East analyst, tweeted that “functionally it doesn’t change much; MBZ is running the show almost since the start of the show”.
US President Joe Biden felicitated his “long-time friend”, while Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed his appointment. The UAE’s March visit by the Syrian leader Bashar al Assad was a heartfelt tribute. The UAE, the third son of founder president Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and Sheikh Mohamed, has sent a probe to Mars and put a man in space. It also opened its first nuclear reactor. It is closely allied with Saudi Arabia and has emerged as the leader of a reshaped Middle East after the withdrawal of traditional Arab powers. The United States reduced its involvement.
