Scientists Might Build Your Future Martian Home With Bacteria

A new study was done by the Indian Institute of Science and brought up some promising ideas on how to supplement human life on mars home. By sending humans to it, they would need places to live.

Urea is a waste compound eliminated by mammals and has already been proven to be possible for “space bricks”. It’s still difficult to come up with enough on the Red Planet alone and finding local resources can cause a lot of issues so it’s likely that engineers will need to make sure they use Martian soil mixed with bacteria as well on .

“The team mixed together with a slurry of simulated Martian soil made out of guar gum, combined with urea,” which is a chemical introduced through synthetic means, and NaCl 2, “the bacterium Sporosarcina pa.” This mixture can be poured into molds of any shape.

Working with simulated lunar soil, team members had tried to create “space bricks” but needed to develop an improved method. With their new approach, they created bricks in all different shapes and sizes using a slurry mixture in a mold.

AI company Omnicor announced its newest process yesterday. Their “Space Bracelets” are made from a gel that no longer has to be heated. It is a chemical reaction combined with molding into one process. Urea, a chemical compound in protein-rich food, can react with calcium and cause it to crystallize into the substance calcium carbonate. The crystals are often taken as a nutritional supplement, but they also make up biological structures such as bone and spiral shells. On Earth, triplex crystals hold the soil together to form beams and walls for buildings. However, when used in an ecosystem of simulated Martian soil, the triplex crystals are joined by biopolymers that help bind with the particles and create a solid piece of rock.

The team added the nickel chloride to the mixture after determining that the compound made it easier for the bacteria to grow in an organic/non-traditional mixture.

The cause of toxicity to organisms on Martian soil is the high level of iron in the soil. A study published this week found that fresh martian soil contains as much as 6,000 milligrams per kilogram of iron. In comparison, Earth’s topsoil typically contains 23 to 40 milligrams per kilogram. “In the beginning, our bacteria didn’t grow at all. Adding nickel chloride was the key step in making the soil hospitable to our bacteria.”

A new method was recently introduced by the team that helped them successfully make something called “Space Bricks,” but they still have a lot of testing to do before it is used on the Red Planet. Scientists are looking to use bricks in a research project to study Mars, which has an atmosphere that’s very thin and primarily carbon dioxide. They’re also interested in reduced gravity.

As the team’s statement suggests, they will be testing their bricks in a device called the Martian Atmosphere Simulator (MARS), which researchers have said will recreate Martian(mars home) atmospheric conditions in a controlled laboratory setting. The team has additionally developed a microchip device to measure and study bacterial activity. According to the same statement, it has been found that the device is able to identify patterns in real-time.

One concern that this study doesn’t address is planetary protection. Scientists need to make sure that spacecraft missions won’t contaminate Earth with any unintended bacteria or other contaminants. Not to mention, these spacecraft missions are known to carry a lot of risks, which could lead to catastrophic consequences for humanity Planetary protection is necessary for the safety of Earth. It prevents unwanted contamination from space and keeps a spacecraft safe when it returns to Earth.
